Bandoneón player and arranger, he is author of the tangos Rapsodia de Arrabal, Paris Otoñal and Bajo Romántico with Omar Murtagh, and Organito Arrabalero with Ernesto Baffa.
He directed the Sexteto Mayor since its beginnings in 1973 and organized the sexteto's tour to Japan.
He was musical director of the Broadway show Tango Argentino, which featured the Sexteto Mayor orchestra and received acclaim from Broadway to Europe.
He was in charge of the musical direction of the world wide success, Tango Pasión, and was a fundamental part of its creation.
José Libertella passed away in Paris on 8th December 2004, at the age of 71, whilst Tango Pasión was on tour.
